We hear a lot about the American slave trade but usually only in reference to what happened on the American side of the border. What many Canadians forget is that Canada was the destination of many individuals seeking liberty. The Underground Railway was one of the primary means of reaching freedom in Canada and Southwestern Ontario was one of the primary destinations for these brave souls.  Ontario has many museums and historical sites where you can learn all about our amazing history.

Chatham-Kent is home to some of the most interesting stops in the Underground Railroad Tour.  This area was the primary destination for those fleeing slavery and ultimately became one of the largest populations of former slaves and one of the most successful black settlements. Stops of interest in the region include the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum and Uncle Tom’s Cabin
A trip to this museum & cultural center will take you on a trip back in time as you journey through the home of an escaped slave and learn the stories of those that settled in Amhestburg and turned it into an important black community.  The Nazrey Church, an important symbol of freedom, is part of the museum complex and can proudly claim to be the first Black historical site in Canada.

This family-run museum is owned & operated by the descendants of John Freeman Walls, a former slave who escaped to the freedom of Canada and became a “free man.”  A visit to this actual terminal of the underground railroad will take you on an interactive visit back in time to learn about the history of the Walls family as well as others who traveled from the Southern US to Canada in search of freedom.
The Niagara Region was a safe destination for refugee slaves who were crossing the Niagara River in search of freedom.  Within the region, St. Catharines, which was a final stop for many on the Underground Railroad, became a hotbed of abolitionist activity.  The St. Catharines Museum, located at Lock 3 of the Welland Canals, explores the history of the city including its importance to the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad.
