Our beautiful Ontario weather has been a little fickle lately, but all in all, we’ve had some beautiful days that make it hard to stay indoors (anyone else putting off their spring cleaning?)  Now is a wonderful time to get outside and explore our magnificent province and what better way to do it than by hiking and biking?  Here are 4 of our top picks…

Durham region lies just minutes east of Toronto, but is worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.  From the beautiful rolling hills of the Oak Ridges Moraine to the picturesque towns, farms, forests and waterfront, it’s an amazing place to explore. There are over 350 km of recreational trails in Durham Region through which you can hike, bike, in-line skate or ride on horseback. View their Trails Guide to see some great options.
The Bruce Trail is a special area, unique to our province, as it is Canada’s oldest and longest footpath and provides visitors with continuous public access to the Niagara Escarpment.  The Escarpment has been recognized as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and is a magnificent place to go for a hike as it takes you through beautiful rolling hills, beaches, waterfalls, massive cliffs, historic sites, wildlife habitats and so much more.

The Niagara Region is full of amazing biking trails, like the Greater Niagara Circle Route, a system of over 140 km of paved mostly off-road trails and roadways.  This “no-cars allowed” area is 3 metres wide and takes you along the Niagara River and its vineyards and fruit orchards, along the shores of Lake Erie, past Niagara Falls and through Niagara on the Lake.
The Algonquin Highlands is yet another area of pristine natural beauty in our amazing province.  This area boasts some of the best hiking and water trails in Ontario’s Highland Region.  In addition to fantastic hiking there are so many attractions to enjoy including the Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower, Hawk Lake Log Chute and more.  Check out the Haliburton Highlands Cycling Coalition for information about cycling in the region.
