"April showers bring May Flowers” and the excitement of the May long weekend! Say goodbye to the end of chilly spring days and hello to hot summer months ahead. Traditional fireworks are a great way to celebrate Victoria Day but there are lots of other great ideas you “may” enjoy doing this long weekend and throughout the month. It’s time to embrace the outdoors!

Perfect Picnic Places:
Take a Cruise:

Food always seems to taste better when eaten outside, under the sun. Why not take your picnic-time to a whole new level by visiting these fun places? My family favourite is Centre Island - Centreville Amusement Park. Take a ferry ride to the Island, enjoy the rides, rent a tandem bike or take a stroll to pick the perfect spot to set up your picnic. Royal Botanical Gardens, known as Canada’s largest botanical garden, has many nature trails, animals, birds and plants to see. It is a perfect place to tour and have a picnic. Have some time? A day trip to experience Niagara Parks Attractions is a great way to spend your weekend. Take a Whirlpool Jet Boat tour, stop in at the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory and when hunger pangs hit, set up a picnic with a picture-perfect view of the breathtaking falls.
How about an adventure on water on a gorgeous late spring day? Climb aboard Jubilee Queen Cruise Lines, Canada’s most popular river showboat for a Victoria Day brunch or dinner cruise & enjoy the spectacular view of Toronto harbour’s skyline. Get wet as you ride into the heart of the Falls on Hornblower Niagara Cruises. View the changing colour light displays of the Falls and see the magnificent fireworks shows set to music while cruising around the Falls. If you are in Eastern Ontario, a trip aboard the 1000 Islands Gananoque Boat Cruise Line offers a unique twist. See what lies above and beneath the ship with live views of historical ship wrecks from below viewed on large screens aboard the ship -  amazing!

Fun Outdoor Activities for Everyone:
Quick Getaways:

The May long weekend marks the beginning of summer and outdoor fun! Here are some great places to get outdoors for all ages. There’s something magical about the African Lion Safari in the Hamilton area. Let your imagination soar as you take in the sights over a 9km safari trail. See lions, giraffes, parrots, elephants and more! Speaking of animals, if you are a dog lover like me, then Woofstock is a great place to go on the May 28th weekend in Toronto at Woodbine Park. Bring your dog(s) to the largest dog show in North America with over 200 vendors of toys, accessories, food and more; other family members are welcome too : ) If you and your family are more adventurous, Camp Fortune in Chelsea, Quebec (just outside of Ottawa) or Treetop Trekking, in Barrie, Huntsville and Port Hope, are great places to start. Experience the thrills of zip-lining, tree-top trekking, rope bridges, obstacle courses and more.
May long weekend inspires the desire for a quick getaway. If you are looking for somewhere new to try, Irwin Inn on Stoney Lake in Lakefield, Ontario has lovely accommodations as well as horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, golfing and hiking – you may even see a moose! If you have a bit more time to travel, Lake Herridge Lodge and Resort in Temagami is just 90 km north of North Bay. The journey may be a bit longer but it is well worth the trip for great fishing, hunting, ATV trails, photo taking and more while you relax in your private lakeside cottage. For a quick getaway just 45 East of Toronto, experience an escape that feels much further away at Jungle Cat World Zoological Park and Bed and Breakfast. Spend the day with your family immersed in the Zoological Park and rest your tired feet with a cozy night stay at the Safari Lodge.

Fun fact: Did you know that May 1 was the beginning of Museum Month in Ontario and that May 18 was International Museum Day? There’s still time to visit some of Ontario’s wonderful museums in May, so plan an outing and soak up all Ontario’s museums have to offer – history, archaeology, trains, canoes, leaders, regions…there is a museum for each of them and more!
