What says “fall” better than a day spent picking apples at an orchard?  It is truly Ontario at its finest – magical colours, crisp, fresh air and delicious apples.  And just think of all the wonderful things you can do at home with the apples you’ve picked – apple pie, apple crisp, apple crumble, apple cake, apple sauce...

At Brooks Farms, they’ve been growing fun for over 100 years!  This family-run farm, which began growing wheat, corn and some root vegetables in the 1800’s, has expanded into a full service farm with pick-your-own fruits, a market, school tours, birthday parties, a Barnyard Playland and incredible, fun-filled year round festivals.

Cricklewood Farm has been a family run operation for over 150 years.  Today, it grows over 44 different varieties of apples, with 13 varieties available for pick-your-own.  Come for a day of apple picking and check out their 6 acre corn maze.  This year’s challenging maze is in the shape of a house and is in support of Habitat for Humanity.

Located on the beautiful and tranquil Niagara Parkway midway between Niagara on the Lake and Niagara Falls, Parkway Orchards has a wide variety of fruits, including apples, available for visitors to pick.  If you come for the day, you can also enjoy a home-made sandwich on fresh baked bread, ice cream or browse in their gift shop.

Orchard Home Farm is an 80 acre family run farm that grows a variety of apples and pears which visitors can come and pick. On select Sundays, there’s even live music in the orchard.   The Farm also sells maple syrup, honey, caramel sauce, cider and home made apple pies.

Avalon Orchards are true pioneers in the organic farming business.  They have been growing a wide variety of organic apples since 1988, all in a beautiful rural setting.  Come out to pick their delicious and certified organic apples, sample their cider or take a stroll along the wooded trails.  You might even catch a glimpse of a beaver or a heron lounging at the pond.

Cannamore Orchard is a “pick-your-own” farm offering apples, strawberries & pumpkins for picking, but they have so much more than that to do!  They are also home to the renowned “Spooky Wagon Ride” as well as multiple mazes, kids play structures, sandboxes, an animal corral and singing chickens!

DELICIOUS APPLE DUMPLINGS
(inspired by a recipe on the website The Pioneer Woman Cooks.)
*  1 tablespoon margarine for greasing pan
*  1 cup (2 sticks) margarine, melted
*  2 ripe Fuji apples, peeled, cored and cut into 8 slices vertically
*  2 cans refrigerated crescent rolls, opened
*  1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
*  1 1/2 cups sugar
*  1/2 teaspoon salt
*  1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
*  1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
*  1 teaspoon vanilla extract
*  1 cup water

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease a 9- by 13-inch pan.

2. Arrange a cooling or draining rack over half of the pan with the melted butter. Using a fork, dip each apple slice into the melted butter and then place on the draining rack so that butter drips back into the pan.

3. Unroll the crescent rolls as you need them. Roll each drained apple up in a crescent roll. Place each apple crescent roll in the prepared pan next to each other until all the apple slices are prepared.

4. Add the brown sugar, white sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and 1/2 cup water to the melted butter. Heat, stirring gently until most of the sugar has dissolved. Pour this mixture over the crescent rolls and apples, making sure to get some on each roll. Pour the remaining 1/2 cup water around the edges of the pan. Place in the preheated oven. Bake until very brown and crisp on top, about 30 minutes.

5. Serve hot, spooning some of the juices on top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream beside the dumplings
