Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre

Welcome to the 2011/2012 season of free concerts and dance events in one of Toronto's most breathtaking and intimate spaces. The diverse city that inspires and unites us is the ever-changing backdrop seen from the beautiful Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, where artists from around the world share their talent and passion in six series: vocal, piano, jazz, dance, chamber and world music.

From late September to early June, you can discover exciting artists, both established and emerging, and experience the joy of live performance in an incredible variety of genres - and it's all free! Concerts take place most Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon, and some Wednesdays at noon or 5:30 p.m.

Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis and seating is limited. Please join the line-up early to avoid disappointment.

Nik Wallenda will be training from May 12th thru May 22nd at the beautiful Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY. It’s free to the public. 10:30- noon and 3:30 – 5:00.

The mist and changing wind conditions are the biggest challenge for the walk, he said.

He’ll use the actual wire he’s crossing the gorge on and is planning to have wind machines brought in, along with fire trucks to spray water on him.

“The only thing I can’t control is the weather,” he said. “But I’m trained for it.”

Rather than having a helicopter on hand to pluck him off, the plan now is to have two rescue carts hanging from the wire below. They’ll stay at each end of the rigging – one in Canada and one in the U.S.

Fireworks at Ashbridges Bay Park cap Victoria Day celebrations

The City of Toronto will host Toronto's only Victoria Day fireworks show at
Ashbridges Bay Park on Monday, May 21. The spectacular 14-minute fireworks
display is planned for 9:45 p.m., rain or shine.

Ashbridges Bay Park is located on Lakeshore Boulevard East, at the foot of
Coxwell Avenue and is easily accessible by public transit. TTC service will be
increased between Queen Street East and the Bloor-Danforth subway on the
Coxwell (22A), Main (64) and Woodbine South (92A) routes to handle the more
than 80,000 people expected at the event. It is recommended that members of the
public use the TTC and leave their cars at home.

A special viewing area has been set aside for people with disabilities and
their families. (Space is limited.)

Please note that City bylaws prohibit the public from setting off personal
fireworks in the park.

The Ottawa International Children's Festival is an annual celebration of the best in live performing arts for children. For over two decades the OICF has presented an abundance of award-winning artists from around the globe and made wide-eyed children out of attendees of all ages. Festival attendance has increased from 5,000 in 2001 to over 20,000 in 2009 - an increase of more than 15,000 visitors in only 8 years. We offer a five-day festival in early June, hosted on the grounds of Lebreton Flats Park and we use venues at the Canadian War Museum. We also present a season of family programming at the theatre at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. The OICF provides a unique opportunity for children and their families to experience the rich heritage of other cultures right in their own backyard. We strive to present work that excites and challenges audiences of all ages, and the festival prides itself on developing and producing award winning programming that comes to us from across Canada and around the world. What Makes the Festival Unique? For five magical days, local, national and international artists create an extraordinary cultural community for children. We have hosted performers from Brazil, Kenya, Peru, Holland, France, England, Germany, Denmark and China, as well as artists from around Canada. The atmosphere is family-friendly and relaxed with a variety of times and dates. The festival is designed to accommodate trips made by school classes as well as families. Weekday performances take place during school hours when there are thousands of students and their teachers in attendance, with plenty of great seats also available for the general public. What we're most proud of, though, is the high quality of professional and international artistry featured in the Festival adventurous performances that stir the imaginations of all ages. The OICF is the only performing arts festival dedicated to young people in central and eastern Ontario.

The Niagara region was the centre of the entire 1812 conflict and the hub of military action. Fighting in Niagara lasted from the late summer of 1812 until the late fall of 1814. No other region in North America can claim this long period of military activity during the War of 1812. The Niagara Region/Frontier was the scene of the hardest fighting of the War of 1812. Based on casualty lists, half the casualties suffered by combatants during the war take place within 35 miles/55 kilometers of the Niagara River. The forts along the river changed hands repeatedly and the most famous stand up firefights of the war take place along the Niagara at Chippawa and Lundy’s Lane. Most of the famous, and infamous, Generals of the war served in the area. Brock, Drummond, Scott, Brown, Harrison; all spend time serving in Niagara. The worst day of fighting, Lundy’s Lane, and the longest siege of the war, Fort Erie. Important naval engagements take place within cannon shot of either side of the Niagara River. Capture of the Detroit and Caledonia, Capture of the Ohio and Somers. Squadrons of warships, some amongst the largest afloat at that time, patrolled the shores of Niagara. John Norton and Red Jacket are two of the famous Native leaders operating in the Niagara area. John Norton allied to the British and Red Jacket allied to the Americans. The remnants of Tecumseh’s army served in Niagara in the last year of the war. No other region can claim, British, American, Canadian, Native and Naval operations combined in one area and on the scale of events in Niagara.
