Explore Smiths Falls!

Smiths Falls, at the Heart of the Rideau Canal, offers small-town charm and a unique history. This year we celebrate our Irish heritage as we kick off a twinning project with a community in County Wicklow, Ireland, where thousands of Irish left their homes to settle in Smiths Falls - building the canals and railways, and working in the thriving industry of Smiths Falls at the turn of the century.

Experience our unique industrial heritage with a walking tour. Or travel by boat down the historic waterway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and setting for the annual Rideau Paddlefest canoe races and a Voyageur Brigade that travels through Smiths Falls this year to celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary. Make sure to stop at the Rideau Canal Visitor Centre to experience canal building history, and go back in time at our Heritage House Museum to explore our founding peoples and industries, research your genealogy, picnic in the gardens, and experience the life of a wealthy mill owner at the time of Confederation, including features like the home’s double façade – and a two-story privy!

Today Smiths Falls is On the Roll, with Highland on the Rideau and the Healthy Living Festival in June, and August events like Race the Runway, the Urban Jungle, and Trainfest at the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario – including a chance to ride the trails or sleep in a caboose!
Enjoy cultural events, like a speakers’ series, live music, film nights, storytelling, or Movies Under the Stars all summer long. Or take in a live theatre performance at The Station Theatre, a historic railway station. There’s so much to do in Smiths Falls - help us explore our past and celebrate our future!
