Township of South Stormont
There is so much to do in South Stormont, you won't want to leave! You'll enjoy attractions, adventures and history as well as acres of trails, parks, camp sites, beaches and the unspoiled beauty of the Long Sault Parkway, along the massive St. Lawrence Seaway and Robert Saunders Dam.
From an historic perspective, there is St. Andrews West - the oldest parish in the area with a rich history and many fine buildings and monuments. The ‘Log Church’ is a replica of one of the first Catholic churches in Upper Canada.
Attractions in South Stormont include world renowned Upper Canada Village, the Lost Villages, the St. Lawrence Parks Campgrounds, Cornwall Motor Speedway, McMaze Cedar Fox Farm and the Canadian Carpin. For those who enjoy a round of golf, there is everything from miniature golf to the championship Upper Canada Golf Links.
The Ontario Waterfront Trail runs along the St. Lawrence River and is perfect for both summer and winter outdoor activities. Within 15 minutes you can visit the St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre where the history of the Seaway Power Project is showcased.
Most of the Trail through South Stormont follows off-road designated paths. You'll find plenty of natural beauty as you travel through wooded areas and along the St. Lawrence. Highlights of this trip include the Upper Migratory Bird Sanctuary and the Long Sault Parkway, a lovely scenic ride that takes you over a series of small islands linked by bridges. Be sure to check out the Lost Villages Museum, about 4 km east of Long Sault, which tells the story of the ten villages that were permanently submerged when the area was flooded to create the St Lawrence Seaway in 1958.
