only in ontario - Wiarton Willie Statue

onlyinontfeb82022.jpgThis statue is in Wiarton, ON of the famous Wiarton Willie.  Wiarton Willie is a groundhog who lives at Bluewater Park that is known to predict whether it will be an early or late spring. In February of each year, a festival is held to see if Willie sees his shadow or not – if he does, it indicates an early spring. This tradition has been around for 66 years and is well known by all Canadians. This statue was created to commemorate Willie’s prognostications by a Toronto artist in 1995, named Dave Robinson.  Robinson created the statue out of dolomite limestone and roughly carved the crystals in the stone to maintain the albino likeness of Willie. The statue weighs a whopping 4.5 tonnes!
