Fantastic Farmers' Markets

Well, SFG fans, it’s almost fall! We’re looking forward to sunny and crisp autumn days, with plenty of fresh produce. This season’s fruits and veggies are a wide variety of tasty and healthy choices. You can buy the last of summer’s blueberries and peas, or pick apples right from the tree. Regardless of what you’re looking to cook with, one of our favourite activities this time of year is heading to a farmers’ market to grab the best local food available.

Here are a few markets around the province to check out:

This is Canada’s largest year-round farmers’ market, with hundreds of food and craft vendors. In addition to delectable local foods, you’ll find international nibbles, as well as housewares, furniture and home décor! Make it a day-trip and walk around the quaint village of St. Jacobs, too!

This Toronto hotspot is only a few years old, but has made a huge splash in the market scene. It operates year-round, and has attracted an amazing assortment of vendors. You can find everything from local organic chocolate to hand-made soaps or catering services! That’s in addition to the freshest fruits, veggies, meat and dairy, of course.

This market is set up right in the village of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and focuses on selling goods from local vendors. Be sure to try some of the amazing Niagara cheeses or honey, and stick around for one of the many cooking demos or workshops! There’s lots to do at this market, so give yourself some time to wander around and enjoy.

This is one of the oldest farmers’ markets in Ontario, with roots dating back to the 1840s. These days, you can find drug-free meats, and wonderful organic produce – and be sure to see the beautiful handmade Muskoka chairs.

No matter where you are in the province, going to a local farmers' market is a great way to get involved in the community and pick up the freshest groceries around. For more markets to check out, visit our Farms, PYO, Artisanal Foods & Markets page!
